In the words of former AU Commission, Chairperson Nkosazane Dlamini Zuma, “Africa has enormous potential, not only to feed itself and eliminate hunger and food insecurity, but also to be a major player in global food markets. This potential lies in its land, water and oceans, in its men and women, in its knowledge and huge markets”.
Africa’s sovereignty, independence and self-determination hinge, to a high degree, on its ability to tap into the enormous potential offered by the agricultural sector as it provides sources of productivity from which even the most disadvantaged people on its land should benefit. Our most urgent and critical need is to re-define our agricultural practices, promote full stakeholder involvement and harness innovation to meet global food demand.
Through the establishment of our own agro-processing plants, we can position the continent to lower its expenditure on imports and to maximise on agricultural products. This can be achieved through investments by both indigenous and foreign investors and through the adoption of innovative technologies.
This Summit is designed to bring together global players to discuss increasing investment opportunities in agriculture and agro-processing, the fostering of entrepreneurship and technological investment in agribusinesses and agri-food value chains, improving national and regional markets, and the fostering of Africa’s collective food security and improving the management of natural resources.
